St Andrew volunteers, led by our safety officer Rob Bradley, are working hard in collaboration with Scottish Canals in order to improve the condition of our 1600m stretch of the Union Canal.
On Thursday 29 October, clearance work will be undertaken by a number of volunteers and Scottish Canals staff. This will include removing weed and overhanging branches, cutting back vegetation along the towpath and litter picking.
The work will improve the amount, quality and safety of usable water along the canal for rowing. Regattas used to be held on the canal with side by side racing – this would be a grand tradition to revive in tie for our 175th anniversary! Improvements to the canal bank will also make it a safer environment with better visibility and fewer obstacles, not only for coaches but also the wider public using the towpath.
Thank you to our volunteers for their hard work!
